Pilchards, commonly called Pacific sardines, are now available after a long absence from the west coast. Particularly prized for their high omega-3 oil content, these fish are sold frozen in 10 kg master containers. Sizing is calculated on a fish count per 10 kg basis with sizes ranging from 40 count to 65+ counts.

Select Seafood is a an innovative fishing and processing company specializing in supplying quality seafood products to discriminating buyers. Their fish handling process known as Superchilling results in having your fish frozen within one hour of catching. Select Seafood supplies product to both domestic and International customers and is currently seeking overseas distributors.

Select's frozen sardines range from 165 to 250 grams. Sardines are graded to be consistent in size, with the size noted on the ends of every box. Fat content varies from 20% to 25 %. Quotes are available on individually quick frozen, glazed or bulk packed in 10 kg. boxes or 600 lb or 1200lb totes. Larger fish can be individually quick frozen, shipped in bulk and later be reprocessed into (50g) fillets or other value added usage. The catching season is from July to October with the fat content peaking in September.

Pacific Sardine Harvest Status

The Pacific sardine resource off California, Oregon, and Washington is managed under the authority of the Coastal Pelagic Species Fishery Management Plan on a January through December fishing season. The harvest guidelines are listed, as are northern and southern allocations in metric tons.

The Pacific sardine harvest is listed in tabular format in metric tons by month, for both the northern and southern regions.

Data from BC Lighthouses. Daily values of sea surface temperature and salinity, archived values of monthly mean temperatures and salinities and photographs of the sites.
